All good things come in threes. The ES-28N is the third speaker in the current Epos range, and the first true 3-way — the flagship Karl-Heinz Fink built once two 7-inch woofers made a 2-way the wrong answer.
Twin bass units, a dedicated 5.25-inch midrange derived from the ES-7N, and the same 28 mm ceramic-coated aluminium tweeter as the ES-14N and ES-7N. In-room bass below 30 Hz, a 50 mm front baffle, a bottom-firing port tuned to 30 Hz. Hi-Fi News: if you liked what Fink did with the ES-14N, you will love these.

Key Features
Fink is known for 2-way speakers, even with large woofers. Two 7-inch drivers in parallel make too tall a radiating area to hand to a tweeter at 2–3 kHz. A D’Appolito layout would put the tweeter at the right height only in an impractical tower. A 2.5-way, with the lower woofer rolling off early, tilts the radiation axis down so the best response sits below ear level and the upper midband thins out. The honest move was a 3-way. That is the ES-28N.
The cabinet is slightly tilted, as on the ES-14N, for driver time alignment. Twin woofers sit in a braced bass-reflex chamber. Construction is sandwich MDF with high-damping glue. The front plate is 50 mm. The midrange has its own compartment with a triangular back to kill internal reflections. The crossover lives behind the tweeter, away from high sound pressure. The 8 cm port fires through the plinth — 30 cm long, tuned to 30 Hz — with pressure-equalising holes that cut the open-tube resonance by nearly 10 dB. Bass still works if the cabinet sits on the floor without spikes.
The two 7-inch woofers share magnet and basket with the ES-14N but use a straight cone and a large inverted dust cap for stiffness at the bottom end. 36 mm voice coil, hybrid ferrite/neodymium magnet, aluminium demodulation rings so inductance does not modulate the crossover. The 5.25-inch midrange is developed from the ES-7N bass unit. The tweeter is identical to the standmounts — 28 mm aluminium/ceramic dome, no ferrofluid.
Crossover points are 330 Hz and 2,700 Hz, a modified Linkwitz-Riley mix. Timing between the woofers and midrange had to be right not only at the join but well above and below it. The aim is the warmth of a good 2-way, the transparency of a smaller midrange, and the power of twin woofers.
