Epos ES-14N Standmount Loudspeakers

The Epos ES-14N is a legend reimagined. Under Karl-Heinz Fink’s technical leadership, the original ES-14 idea has been rebuilt with modern drivers, measurement and materials — the same cabinet volume as the classic, a very different speaker.

It is a large two-way standmount: 7-inch mica-filled polypropylene bass, 28 mm ceramic-coated aluminium tweeter, rear port, tilted baffle. What Hi-Fi? gave it five stars and called it the performance standard at the price — “welcome back Epos.”

Key Features

Fink redesigned the ES-14 using his Essen measurement rooms and decades of work for other major brands. The brief was not nostalgia. It was to keep the spirit of a simple, musical British standmount and take the engineering far beyond what was possible forty years ago. The result is a speaker many now treat as a class reference: stable imaging, transparent voices, punchy controlled bass, and a balance that is both revealing and easy to live with.

Cabinet volume follows the original, because that volume is what the driver and bandwidth need. The shape does not. The front baffle is tilted back to time-align woofer and tweeter and to break up front-to-back standing waves. A 45° chamfer around the extra front plate controls diffraction in the 2–3 kHz region. Panels are double-layer MDF with modern damping glue and extra bracing. The rear port is shaped to keep airflow quiet; openings in the middle of the tube kill pipe resonances without losing the bottom end. Alignment is a flat 4th-order reflex, tuned to 38 Hz, to work with typical room gain.

The 7-inch bass unit is a new design: injection-moulded polypropylene cone with variable thickness and mica fill, low-hysteresis rubber surround, 35 mm two-layer voice coil, hybrid ferrite and neodymium magnet with compensation rings so inductance stays constant over excursion. The tweeter is the 28 mm aluminium/ceramic dome shared with the ES-7N — no ferrofluid, resonance peak pushed to around 30 kHz. It sits on four points only, in its own cabinet cavity. The oval metal grille over the dome is part of the voicing and is not removable. Fabric grilles are supplied as protection; leave them off for listening.

The crossover is more sophisticated than the original’s handful of parts. Electrical filtering is easier to control than mechanical roll-off in the driver. Single-wire 4 mm banana sockets on a metal plate use very little metal internally — a good idea kept from the original ES-14.

Dedicated stands are worth having. The column is four layers of wood glued with the same damping compound as the cabinet. Top plate is double steel with bitumen; base is thick steel with adjustable spikes. Recommended height is 515 mm. Speakers can ship without stands if you already have ~55 cm stands.

What Hi-Fi?

What Hi-Fi? scored the ES-14N 5/5 for sound, build and compatibility. Verdict: they set the performance standards at this level. Strengths: startling clarity and composure; an authoritative, punchy, balanced presentation; impressive stereo imaging; pleasing build and finish.
